Agritech: Shaping the Future of Agriculture

Agritech Startups
According to a report by the United Nations, in order to meet the growing food needs of the world by 2050, the food production will have to be increased by 70 percent.  A number of tech startups had commenced operations in areas such as precision farming, hybrid seeds, farm management software, geo-tagging, etc. These agritech companies were well placed to impact the farming practices and increase food production in India and across the world.
In this volume, we have covered 4 case studies on agritech startups – DeHaat, Kheyti, SunCulture, and Avani Eco. The case studies touch upon farm land digitization, end-to-end agricultural solutions, affordable greenhouse, solar-powered based irrigation kits, and bio-plastic bags.
DeHaat came out with an innovative platform that offered end-to-end agricultural solutions for the farmers. The farmers got the information related to agri-inputs and agri-outputs at a single place, thereby eliminating the need for middlemen and distributors. The DeHaat platform helped the farmers get the right agri-inputs on time at a competitive price and the market linkages provided on the platform enabled the farmers to get the right price for their produce. Based on each farmer profile, DeHaat also provided crop advisory services to the farmers such as how to cultivate the most suitable crop, the correct fertilizer and pesticides to use, and the right time for harvesting and processing the agri-outputs based on each farmer’s profile.
Kheyti’s agritech solution provided the small and marginal farmers with an affordable greenhouse that utilized less water and protected the crops from the vagaries of nature such as extreme climate and pest attacks. Kheyti’s greenhouse-in-a-box (GIB) used 90% less water, and produced seven times more agri-outputs. Kheyti’s GIB model provided bundled services such as input linkage, loan linkage, advisory services, and market access services for sustainable development and freed the small farmers from the recurring cycle of poverty in which they found themselves due to frequent crop failures.
SunCulture was a Kenya based Startup that offered a solar-power based irrigation kit to small land holding farmers to improve their productivity. SunCulture had brought smart technology within the reach of small land holding farmers by leveraging on GSM connectivity, IoT technology, and Machine Learning. The small land holding farmers had seen a 300 % increase in yield with reduced usage of fertilizers, diesel, and water. SunCulture’s technology had impacted around 570 million small land holding farmers in Africa.
Avani Eco was started by Kevin Kumala (Kumala), an Indonesian social entrepreneur. Kumala had come up with a breakthrough innovation with a root vegetable, cassava to combat plastic pollution. Avani Eco manufactured a compostable bioplastic bag as an alternative to plastic. The bioplastic bags were biodegradable and did not pose any danger to humans and animals. Avani Eco also manufactured a range of sustainable food packaging and hospitality products from renewable resources.
